We took an evening boatride down
one of Suzhou's narrow canals. Many people were home relaxing, often waving
to us as we drifted by. A woman tended her collection of potted plants
on a stone terrace that hung out over the water, a man did some washing
up from a plastic basin. A passing glimpse through an open window revealed
someone cooking dinner. We could smell the food and hear the rhythmic
clank-clank-clink of the metal utensils in the woks. Some homes had small
bamboo bird cages hung on the outer walls overlooking the water. It grew
dark and our canal boatride was almost over. Our guide told us that these
old canal-side homes are slated for demolition and will be replaced with
modern buildings within a few years.
